During the closing plenary session at IASPM 2011 International conference, six speakers from as many continents were asked to present their summarising comments on the conference. These are Bruce Johnson’s reflections for Australasia.
First, I want once again to thank and congratulate the conference organisers for the logistical triumph they have achieved in getting us all to this relatively inaccessible destination, for looking after us so well and so cheerfully, and for organising not just the conference, but some really memorable excursions. Call for Papers
This conference will explore issues of race, the cultural industries and cultural production. Following Greg Dyke’s famous comment that the BBC is ‘hideously white’ there has been an increasing recognition of how non-whites are marginalised in the media – both in terms of participation and portrayal. Indeed, in recent years there have been numerous initiatives launched across the cultural sector that have made efforts to increase and encourage participation from minority communities. Yet tensions remain regarding social and cultural barriers to entry as well as critical issues to do with the representation of non-white groups. Continue reading

The ASPM (Arbeitskreis Studium Populaerer Musik) and the University of Osnabrueck are inviting applications for participation in the first international summer school “Methods of Popular Music Analysis”. The summer school will take place at the Institute of Musicology and Music Pedagogy in Osnabrueck, Germany, from Monday 12th to Friday 16th September 2011. The summer school is addressed to post graduates and Ph.D. students who are currently working on a research project that involves analytical approaches towards popular music. Continue reading

Popular Music and Society invites article proposals for a new special issue. Fandom is both a personal expression of emotional conviction and a complex, changing, multi-faceted social phenomenon that now encompasses both online and offline activity.
The study of fandom is a scholarly niche that exists at the intersection of a wide range of interests and connections. It can be contextualized by wider media research (theory by scholars such as Henry Jenkins and Matt Hills; reception analysis; celebrity studies; ethnography; subcultural theory) and by direct research into popular music culture (ethnomusicology; research on listening; live music audiences; studies of music in everyday life). We are delighted to announce the call for papers for the 2011 annual conference of IASPM-ANZ. This year, the conference will be organised by convener Dr Geoff Stahl, and held at Victoria University of Wellington. We are pleased to stage our annual event in New Zealand once again, in keeping with the rotating conference schedule of Australia and New Zealand locations. Abstracts for paper presentations are now invited from researchers with an interest in popular music, regardless of disciplinary orientation. All papers detailing new and established research in the field will be considered, though preference may be given to papers that demonstrate clear engagement with the stated conference theme. Papers with a theoretical orientation are particularly encouraged, as are submissions from postgraduate students. Continue reading
