Popular music education is a subject that is at present under-explored, despite increasing numbers of popular music courses and other educational provision. More research is needed to map out the area and engage critically with the many new challenges it is presenting. IASPM@Journal, the journal of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, wishes to encourage further research and debate in this area, with a special issue on popular music education, for publication in 2015. Abstract: Born in Wallsend, a mainly working class area of North Tyneside in the early 1950s, Gordon Sumner, aka Sting’s creativity and drive for success were established in the region of his birth, with vestiges of the spaces and places of his upbringing, social conditions and ‘Northern Englishness’ continuing to re-emerge in his music long after he left the area. When broadly considering his relationship with the city, it is possible to regard the years 1977 – 1985 in terms of ‘outward momentum’, while close to the last 30 years have witnessed an increasing gravitational pull – during which his interface with the city has become more regular and profound. Popular music has a growing presence in education (formal and otherwise), from primary school to postgraduate study. Programmes, courses and modules in popular music studies, popular music performance, songwriting and many areas of music technology that could be said to relate chiefly to popular music (such as DJ-ing, for example) are becoming commonplace across higher education. Additionally, specialist pop/rock/jazz graded exam syllabi (RockSchool and Trinity Rock and Pop, for example) have emerged in recent years, meaning that it is now possible for school leavers in some countries to have obtained university entry requirements having only studied popular music. In the context of teacher education, classroom teachers and music-specialists alike are becoming increasingly empowered to introduce popular music into their classrooms. However, discourse regarding ‘popular music’ in education still tends to take place alongside normative discourse around ‘music’. The theme of this year’s conference is “Into the Mix”. The “mix” is both literal (referring to various stages in the production of popular music, as well as important creative processes such as sampling, remixing and DJing) and an analogy for all types of musical hybridities and encounters, the fluid nature of musical meanings and musical experiences, and the fluidity or movement of ideas, sounds and peoples. The notion of the “mix” is defined broadly; it might involve popular music production processes, a creative setting, or another space where people, places and processes are foregrounded as part of an interpretive cultural analysis. Contributions might be case-study analyses underpinned by historical, ethnographic or critical enquiry, or focused entirely on theoretical orientations addressing music production, as well as hybridity and related topics. Whether in relation to rhythms, eras, live performances, lyrics, identities, politics, scenes, production, or changing technologies, the topic of time can be linked to popular music in a variety of ways. The compartmentalising of sounds into genres, the ageing of audiences, and the shifting sands of the music industry all invoke notions of the temporal. For the 18th Biennial IASPM Conference, we invite researchers and practitioners to submit proposals for presentations that engage with the theme of time.
