Trying to understand music as a social form raises the issue of methods. This is partly because of the ubiquity and polyvalence of music, which penetrates all areas of the social world in multiple ways, making investigation difficult. A further problem is that many conventional ways of representing musical sounds and practices pose challenges to scholars outside musicological disciplines. Yet is clear that to understand why music matters to people so profoundly we need a grasp both of the social, and the ways that music works as organised sound. How do we achieve this? You, Me, User – Conference on User-Generated Culture

From social media to video games and from online fan production to machinima, the phenomenon of user-generated culture has secured its position in the mainstream during the last few years. This shift has resulted from the blurring boundaries between media production and consumption as well as between professional and amateur authorship. The phenomenon is claimed to be characterized by collaboration, accessibility and democratic potential. During the You, Me, User Conference we approach the user-generated culture, or in other words, multiple situations where culture becomes modified, produced and distributed through everyday practices, social and new media. The use of this and related terms (auteur-compositeur-interprète, cantautore and cantautor to name but three) and interpretations of the singer-songwriter’s work differ significantly according to the cultures in which such music is produced and received.
