2021 Popular Music Books in Process Series

2021 Popular Music Books in Process Series, Call for Presentations

Since June, in response to the Covid-19 crisis, Popular Music Books in Process has presented a weekly online event for music writers and scholars to showcase their new books or books in progress to an engaged and interactive audience. The series is a collaboration between the Journal of Popular Music Studies, the Pop Conference, and IASPM-US.

Our 2020 run is scheduled to end in December. But since the pandemic continues, we are inviting new proposals for the first half of 2021. If you are publishing a book between now and June 2021, or have a work in progress, please let us know. Details are below. While all kinds of formats are welcome, we’d suggest you think about inviting one or more other people to join you in dialogue about your project, or to co-present on multiple projects — this has tended to make for livelier sessions in the Zoom medium than solo presentations. (Some authors have even incorporated live music.) If you don’t have ideas for co-presenters, we may be able to suggest some, or pair you with another presentation that’s topically compatible.

cfp: Musical Mobilities –Stage and Film Musical in motion (15th Song, Stage & Screen conference)

Call for Papers – Song, Stage and Screen XV

We are delighted to be able to announce the Call for Papers for Song, Stage and Screen XV: “Mobilities – Stage and Film Musical in Motion”, to be held at Salzburg University (Austria) from June 30 – July 3, 2021.

We invite papers that scrutinize the stage and film musical through the notion of mobility. We are interested in contributions that approach the topic from diverse angles but with a constant focus on the mobility paradigm in the humanities. We aim to find new ways to analyze production, performance, composition, dance, artistic conception, and the political territorialization of the genre.

cfp: Music and the Moving Image Conference XVII

The annual Music and the Moving Image Conference encourages submissions from scholars and practitioners that explore the relationship between the entire universe of moving images (film, television, streaming, video games, and live performances) and that of music and sound through paper presentations. We encourage submissions from multidisciplinary teams that have been pooling their knowledge to solve problems or discover a new perspective regarding music and moving images.

The Keynote Address: Studio Legends NY — will feature a panel comprised by venerable New York studio musicians who recorded some of the most iconic film scores by leading composers. Film/TV composer and NYU professor Mark Suozzo will lead the discussion.

cfp: Independent Music Labels: Histories, Practices and Values (new dates)

Call for Papers:

Independent Music Labels: Histories, Practices and Values

NEW DATES: 23-24.06.2021 | Lisbon | NOVA FCSH

Within the field of popular music studies, little attention has been given to the impacts of independent music labels outside the Anglo-Saxon context, particularly in the production, dissemination and consumption of music in semi-peripheral countries such as Portugal. On the other hand, when the scope of the reflection goes beyond the Anglo-Saxon context the study of major record companies has been privileged over small structures of local / national scope which operate independently from these large companies and/or media groups with a transnational reach. Starting from broader discussions about the relationship between the local and the global in music production, this colloquium proposes a discussion on the impact of independent music labels with a particular focus on the Portuguese context and/or in contexts that are similarly located outside the main production centers. We will take as a starting point some recognized (yet open to scrutiny) assumptions about independent labels in the field of music production: the dissemination and making available of local musics and artists in opposition to the hegemony of global (mostly Anglo-Saxon) artists and genres released by multinationals; the valuing of aesthetic and artistic dimensions in music making at the expense of its commercial potential; the forms of organization and work that are innovative and adaptable to the changing contexts in the record sector, particularly in the new millennium. This is an inter and multidisciplinary colloquium accepting proposals in disciplines such as musicology, ethnomusicology, sociology, anthropology and history, among others. We also hope to establish a dialogue between the academy and the record sector with the presence and participation of independent label managers.

cfp: Music, Sound, and Trauma: Interdisciplinary Perspectives

Location: Online

Date: February 12-14, 2021

Keynote Speaker: Maria Cizmic (University of South Florida), and others TBA

Although trauma has always shaped human lives, discussions of trauma have especially come to the fore in our current moment. From the pandemic’s impacts—including global spikes in domestic violence and adverse impacts on mental health—to the tragedies of systemic racism and police brutality, trauma dominates contemporary conversations for wide swaths of people. Today’s focus on trauma follows a decade of burgeoning attention to the socio-cultural and psychological causes and effects of trauma in popular media and academic scholarship, including music studies. This conference—”Music, Sound, and Trauma: Interdisciplinary Perspectives”— seeks to bring together scholars working in and beyond music and sound studies to address the myriad ways that music and sound historically and contemporaneously not only have helped people process trauma, but also have been implicated in violence resulting in trauma. In addition, we are especially interested in hearing from scholars working with music and sound in pedagogical contexts with a focus on trauma-informed teaching and learning.
