Music scholarship has widened enormously in scope in the last several decades, especially in response to developments in sociology and cultural studies. Previously accepted concepts such as excellence, authenticity and value have become understood as social constructions rather than inherent or aesthetically autonomous. As a result, long-established canons have been questioned and the boundary between ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture has become less secure, with questions of aesthetics becoming intertwined with questions of politics and identity. An online scientific journal dedicated to popular music studies, issue 3 of the Brazilian Journal of Song Studies is now available. Although most of the articles are in Portuguese, there are two in English in the current issue – one about Pink Floyd’s “Goodbye Blue Sky” and another about Iron Maiden’s songs with historical themes.

Please attach a letter of support from your institution stating either you are not getting funded or that you are being partially funded.

The deadline for submission is 25 March.

Successful applicants will be notified by 29 March.

Grants will be awarded at the conference.

We are currently receiving papers for the fourth issue of RBEC – Brazilian Journal of Song Studies, due to be online in the second semester of 2013. We welcome works that deal with popular music (Brazilian, Anglo-American, Hispanic, etc.) under any analytical approaches, be they musicological, literary, historical, sociological, philosophical… Guidelines for submissions are available on the journal’s website.

The deadline is 30 April 2013, and papers should be sent to estudosdacancao@gmail.com. We kindly remind authors that articles which do not conform to the journal’s guidelines will be rejected, and also that they are fully responsible for the textual/grammatical accuracy of their texts.
