The consortium, whose 8 members include our partner Music departments at Bath Spa, Bristol and Southampton, has secured 200 studentships to be disbursed over 5 years. Students within the DTP are based in a single department, but the consortium works on the principle of collaborative supervision and is also working in partnership with major arts and culture organisations both in the UK and abroad. In 2005, radio scholar Michele Hilmes raised the question whether there was a field called Sound Culture Studies? Her answer was a cautious “yes, there is a field”. We agree, even though it has become increasingly difficult, even for an avid reader, to have a genuine feeling of a single field of sound studies. We see developments that call for institutional change within the academy. And outside academia we witness a growing interest for sound artworks, sound archives, sound designs, audio books, etc. All these examples testify to a vivid, exiting, and rapidly changing field or fields of sound studies. Ramapo College of New Jersey invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music in the School of Contemporary Arts to begin Fall 2014. The ideal candidate will lead instrumental music performance courses and develop ensembles as well as teach all levels of Musicianship, Music Theory, Songwriting and Improvisation. The ability to teach core courses for students seeking Teacher Certification or courses in the Music Industry concentration is also desirable. The Music program at Ramapo is oriented toward contemporary music; therefore fluency in diverse contemporary practices including popular, rock, hip-hop, electronic and jazz, in addition to traditional Western music, is required. Keyboard proficiency is required and expertise on guitar is desired.

Music, Politics and Dictatorships in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula During the 20th Century

Recently there has been an expanded interest in the connections between music making and the political life that Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries experienced under the authoritarian regimes of the 20th century. This concern has been expressed in a critical analysis of the topics and methodologies traditionally used to tackle the relationship between music and politics. Among the topics that have marked a turning point in the intersection between the social sciences, the humanities and music research are: the “industry’s” appropriation of music for political ends; the changes in the legal frameworks advanced by local cultural politics; the clandestine lives of politicized musicians, and the activities of resistance in which they participated. Furthermore, the connections between theatre, dance and film, and the role of television in legitimizing symbolic violence against political dissidence (as well as the social effects of such violence) have begun to be studied in order to understand the role of music in political contexts — not to mention how social memory and forgiveness have been currently addressed in ongoing post-dictatorial times.
