The State of the Music Industry

The next issue of the journal Civilisations, published by the Department of Languages and Civilisations, University of Toulouse 1 Capitole, will be dedicated to the music industry. It is a familiar story that the music industry is in a state of turmoil. This issue will look at past, current and future trends in the industry. In line with the journal’s interdisciplinary emphasis, the Editorial Committee is seeking contributions from the disciplines of history, economics, law, sociology, and from the larger field of human social sciences.

Articles relating to the following themes are particularly encouraged:

– The historical development of the music industry
– Public policy
– Business models
– Fan-funding
– 360° deals
– Branding
– Relationships between independent and major labels
– The influence of DIY
– The live music scene
– Changes in music consumption
– Case studies of bands/artists on how they have adapted to the changing music business

The focus may relate to France or indeed any other country. Abstracts (c. 250 words) with a short C.V. should be submitted by 15 September 2013.
