Looking Popular: Representations of the Popular in Music Visual Culture
Intercongressional Symposium

The Conference will present recent research on topics related to the manner in which “the popular” in its manifold expressions might be represented in visual culture related to music, theatre and dance. Topics may include, but are not restricted to:

– visual culture and media theory related to music, theatre and dance.
– organology of the instruments in use or of influence in popular music.
– popular music, theatre and dance culture as visually presented.
– topics relating to the popularisation of so-called art music as represented in visual culture.
– rock, jazz and pop music and related art forms in visual culture.

Proposals in three formats are invited:

1. Paper Presentations
Paper presentations of 30 minutes (including time for questions and discussion) are invited. These must present original research and findings and may be on any topic relevant to the broad scope of the symposium. Please submit an abstract of maximum 200 words and a curriculum vitae not exceeding 100 words, including contact details.

2. Panel Sessions
Panel sessions gather perspectives of three or four presenters into a cohesive exchange of innovative ideas, current topics, and salient issues surrounding the topics of the symposium. Lasting 90 minutes (including time for questions and discussion), panel sessions are intended to engage their audience in thinking about or participating in discussions surrounding the main topic of the panel session. Short statement papers by the panel participants of maximum 10 minutes are invited. Panel sessions will be selected based on their relevance, clarity of purpose and intended outcome for the audience and the wider scholarly community. Applying for a panel session requires the following information and material:
– Title of panel session.
– Abstract of the panel session (max. 500 words) session including statement of relevance, purpose and intended outcome of the panel session.
– Full contact details and cv (max. 100 words) of the Chair of the panel session.
– Full contact details and cv (max. 100 words) of the panel session participants.
– Abstract of maximum 200 words of each paper to be presented at the panel session.
Please note: Communication will be conducted with the chair of the panel session only.

3. Presentations including performances and/or compositions
Presentations of 30 minutes which incorporate live performance and/or compositions will be particularly welcomed but should be presented as a paper-recital/performance or paper-demonstration, following the same application requirements as “paper presentations” (see above).

Deadline and Requirements for Submission
Proposals for presentations will be accepted until 28 February 2014 (17:00 GMT). Confirmation of receipt will be given within 48 hours of the e-mail proposal being received.

Please submit all relevant material as an email attachment in Word format (pdf or any other format will not be reviewed) to: conference@ridim.org with “Paper Presentation”, “Panel Presentation” or “Presentation performance/composition” respectively in the subject field of the e-mail.

Acceptance of submissions for inclusion in the conference will be notified to the author or the chair of the panel session respectively by 31 March 2014.

The decision of the Programme Committee is final and no correspondence will be entered into concerning the decision.

The language of the abstracts and presentations will be English. Presentations must be delivered in person at the Conference. Please be advised that submitting a paper presentation proposal and/or panel session proposal will constitute your consent to the publication of your paper presentation and panel session material in the symposium proceedings (which might take the form of printed and/or electronic media and will be publicised in social media) in case of a positive decision by the programme committee.

An early registration fee of Euro 120 will be available until 31 May 2014, after which date the fee will be Euro 150. Presentations can only be delivered with valid registration. All attendees are obliged to register for the conference, including those not giving a presentation.
