It is a great pleasure to us to inform you all about the foundation of an IASPM branch for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Our mission statement is as follows:

IASPM D-A-CH is the German-speaking branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM). The abbreviation D-A-CH represents the countries Germany (D), Austria (A) and Switzerland (CH). The branch emerged from a network of both young and established scholars from different academic disciplines and is open to anyone interested in the academic discussion of popular music.

IASPM D-A-CH is dedicated to the academic research of popular music worldwide in all its aspects, spanning from the dawn of popular music at the end of the 18th century to the present, in its local, regional, and transnational forms and how it has been influenced through processes of globalization and mediaization.

IASPM D-A-CH acts as a bridge between German- and non-German-speaking scholars within the field of popular music. Here the plurality of methods as well as discussions related to terminology and theories are central. IASPM D-A-CH organizes biannual conferences which are coordinated with IASPM as well as workshops, and initiates research projects. In its approach to popular music, IASPM D-A-CH specifically aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas between scholars and actors in the field of musical performances and cultural politics, the music industry and media.

A central aim of IASPM D-A-CH is the sustainable long term integration of popular music in the curriculum and research at universities, conservatories, and academies of music and arts as well as at grant giving bodies for research funding in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. To do so, IASPM D-A-CH draws on its members’ experience and knowledge based on national and international university- and research-politics. A cornerstone in the branch’s activities is to facilitate international and interdisciplinary networking among ambitious young scholars.

We are currently planning a founding workshop which is to take place in Berne, Switzerland on 25/26 May 2013. We will keep you posted about the details. In the meantime, any current information as well as a contact form for messages to all our board members can be found on our website.

We are very much looking forward to the events and collaborations that will arise from this initiative.

Best regards on behalf of all board members,

Susanne (Chair) and Oliver (General Secretary)
