Faculty vacancy in ethnomusicology: beginning August 2012
Position: Ethnomusicologist
Rank and salary: Assistant Professor, tenure track; salary commensurate with experience.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in ethnomusicology or related field; strong background in both cultural anthropology and historical musicology; fieldwork experience; evidence or promise of excellence in research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and advising at the graduate level.
Responsibilities: The Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology of the University of Maryland School of Music seeks an ethnomusicologist of exceptional promise or established reputation. Specialists in any geographic area may be considered, with particular consideration given to those whose research specialization complements the University’s strengths in Latin America, the Middle East, or American Studies. Ability to enhance interdisciplinary interaction with programs such as theatre and dance, and /or technological expertise in areas such as digital recording and editing desirable. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to teach undergraduate general education courses and graduate seminars (including fieldwork and anthropology of music), supervise Teaching Assistants, and teach graduate seminars and upper-level undergraduate courses in their research specialty. Other responsibilities will include supervision of theses and dissertations in ethnomusicology and historical musicology, and service on School of Music and university committees. Participation in the activities of area studies centers and interdisciplinary Graduate Field Committees is also welcome.

The School of Music is a comprehensive arts institution housed in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, a state-of-the-art complex with six performance venues, classrooms, and the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library. The ethnomusicology program offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, and also supports performing ensembles in the musics of Bali, Japan, Korea, and West Africa. Located less than an hour from the center of the Nation’s Capital, the University is linked by mass transit to the homes of two major orchestras (National Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Symphony) and numerous cultural centers including the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Museums, the National Gallery, and the Corcoran and Kreeger Museums.
