Popular Music Studies are today a key field of enquiry. Exploring the parameters of research on popular music in contemporary times lies at the centre of the 19th Biennial IASPM Conference. Music composition and sound design in video games are important dimensions in the experience of play, gaining increased acknowledgement and attention within the game industry. The growing relevance and success of several kinds of music-based games, and their codification in novel genres and sub-genres, illustrates one tendency in this shift of focus towards the aural in relation to the usually visual dominance of the medium. Students can study popular music at the University of Huddersfield at MA, MPhil or PhD level, and can include composition, performance, musicology, music technology and production. Students participate in a lively research environment, with 50 postgraduate students and a regular programme of events, concerts and seminars. Applications are encouraged which include practice based research, such as composition, performance or studio production, this work is usually accompanied by a short thesis. The Department is housed in the purpose-built Creative Arts Building, which provides state of the art facilities. The University is also home to the Centre for Research in New Music (CeReNeM), the Popular Music Studies Research Group, and the renowned Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
