The University of Western Ontario invites applications, nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Dean of the Don Wright Faculty of Music. The appointment, for an initial five-year term, begins July 2011.

The Don Wright Faculty of Music, with a full-time student body of 535 undergraduate and 127 graduate students, is one of the largest music schools in Canada and supports a wide range of studies at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels in music education, composition, performance, history and theory. The lively atmosphere of the school is broad enough to offer an extraordinary variety of opportunities yet small enough to allow for close associations. There are 44 full-time and 74 part-time faculty members in three departments: Music Education, Music Performance Studies and Music Research and Composition. The Faculty is very active in research and graduate teaching, with outstanding facilities that include one of North America’s top music libraries. The Don Wright Faculty of Music is a creative and artistic centre at Western and in Canada, and produces more than 400 concerts each year. A strong support staff is in place to sustain the admissions, publicity and performance activities of a major music school, and to maintain a large and specialized inventory of instruments and equipment. The Dean of the Don Wright Faculty of Music will be a respected and innovative leader with professional and academic qualifications relevant to the academic mission of the Faculty. He/she will have a proven background as a visionary communicator and educator with distinguished achievements in an area of the Faculty’s endeavours. As part of the senior academic, administrative team reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), he/she will guide the continuing development of the academic programs, research, and creative life within the Faculty, the University, and the musical community in Canada. Candidates should possess wide-ranging expertise and skills, including a demonstrated record of achievement and experience in, or an understanding of, student relations, research, fundraising and external relations.
